This post was inspired by Tobi’s post here, which was inspired by two previous #SOL posts.
I don’t often consider lists when I’m writing, but I think it’s a useful strategy, and I decided to follow Tobi’s lead. This list is in no particular order.
- I’ve been a late bloomer in many ways for most of my life.
- I have long revered trees and forests in particular.
- While in university, I spent a month travelling around Istanbul and along the Bosphorus to Izmir.
- I used to speak some Turkish, but don’t remember many words now.
- Dogs have always shared my home. Or, maybe I should say, that they’ve always let me share the sofa with them.
- I sometimes read scientific journal papers.
- Because of my reading, my husband and I use the sauna and cold plunge once a week.
- I lived in Florida for a year and went to Jacksonville University on a scholarship.
- My favourite colour is green, nearly any shade of green, but mostly dark green.
- I managed and taught fitness classes at a Nautilus gym in Hamilton.
- My signature order at my local coffee shop (Equator Coffee) is a matcha latte (no sweetener) and a double espresson on the side. (The staff there know this and are so kind.)
- I have significant reservations about my middle name and am considering changing it – and, I know this is silly at this point in my life.
- I eat a colourful cruciferous vegetable and kale salad with nuts and a balsamic dressing nearly every day.
- When I was 11 years old, my family travelled 6000 miles across Canada, down the west coast of the USA to Mexico and back; we camped the whole way.
- I worked as a lab gopher for the Veterinarian College at the University of Guelph when I was a student.
- I buy too many books and usually buy them when I’m feeling confused or curious about something; books help me feel better and understand the world.
- We watch lots of Scandanavian television and I enjoy reading subtitles.
- I incorporate adaptogenic mushrooms into my coffee or tea or ceremonial chocoate each day.
- My house was build in 1900 and there is a low ceiling basement (cold storage) with a large stone in the center.
- I’ve been told that my tears are very close to the surface.
- I notice birds and have always been fascinated by them.
“I buy too many books and usually buy them when I’m feeling confused or curious about something; books help me feel better and understand the world.”
Me too.

I love this list! How long did it take you to create it? It is so varied, I imagine thoughts must have come to you over several days. I shivered at #7 – yet, what a marvelous ritual to share with a partner, I think. I love how you closed with 20 (tears close to surface) and 21 (fascination with birds) – I hear empathy and love of nature in these.

I think my reply dropped so I’ll try again, Maureen, and thank you! The list came to me during one sitting of 30ish minutes as I spanned years of memories and what some might not know about me. Thank you for noticing the closing connection.

Melanie,
I am so glad you wrote this post. You are a fascinating human who has had an amazing life. I’m particularly interested in your food choices. Tell me the mushrooms don’t taste in beverages. I love mushrooms but can’t wrap my head around drinking them. My tears are close to the surface, too. Always have been.

Thank you for such kind and generous comments, Glenda. The medicinal mushrooms I use are usually mixed with chocolate or coffee, and they don’t have a flavor. Reishi, Lion’s Mane, and sometimes cordyceps- much better than pharmaceuticals ☺️
